CLOTHING ARTS — Pick Pocket Proof Apparel.
Nothing ruins a vacation faster than a stolen wallet or passport.
With all my world travels the only time I lost my wallet to a pick-pocket was on the Orange train line leading into Chicago. Disembarking in the underground metro tunnel I followed the signs up a gritty set of dimly lit stairs leading to the street. I felt a tug on my bag and looked back and the thief had my wallet tucked in a folded newspaper. What could I do? Did he have a gun or knife? He took off dodging traffic on a busy street and I could not chase him with all my luggage. I vowed this would never happen again so I purchased a truck-driver wallet on a chain.
The pick-pocket business is thriving globally - 400,000 a day. I am standing at the hot dog stand at the Westward Ho in Las Vegas when I felt a pull on my belt and a pick-pocket grinned with my chained wallet in his hand; he beat a hasty retreat from the casino. But it is not just items on your person that are getting stolen. There's a billion dollar-a-year business worldwide of thievery on the airlines. They rummage through carry-on bags while in flight, or walk off with someone else's briefcase upon landing. And how about carousel baggage theft? The same is true on trains.
Luckily there are ways to counter these crooks. For many years Clothing Arts has manufactured their trademarked Pick Pocket Proof pants and shirts, for men and women, and their new Cubed Travel Jacket is in stores this Spring.
The 2016 Clothing Arts Cubed Travel Jacket.
Look safari chic in Clothing Arts pants, shirts, and new travel jacket, while protected from the vultures, the travel vultures that pick your pockets. Let's foil the pick-pockets.
Fusing cutting-edge materials, minimalist design, and expert construction, the Brooklyn-based brand Clothing Arts has created the holy grail of outerwear: practical enough for outdoor adventures but chic enough for urban living. Whether on the way to the office or off on a trail, the new Cubed Travel Jacket is the essential travel item.
Waterproof shells were developed for use in the outdoors, so they have traditionally been designed for specific activities like mountaineering. Features like pockets placed to stay out of the way of a harness and shoulders wide enough for swinging ice axes are great when dangling hundreds of feet above a glacier, but less practical for accessing a phone during a morning commute.
“I wanted a jacket that could be suited to any environment, regardless if I was in a meeting or hiking in the mountains,” said Clothing Arts founder Adam Rapp. “Why shouldn’t a city dweller have the same weather protection biking to work as an athlete training on the side of a mountain?”
Clothing Arts spent years developing the Cubed Travel Jacket, and it shows in the carefully considered details. What is really cool about all their apparel is the Cubed design. A button down flap crosses over the zinc zippers so a pick-pocket has to first unbutton a stiff button with a tight button hole before unzipping access to your valuables that can't be found in hidden pockets. How unique!
Their designers eliminated fabric bulk to create a sleek silhouette and chose a highly durable, breathable fabric with a natural feel, which isn’t shiny or noisy like the plastic-feeling face fabrics found on most waterproof shells. Instead of using bright, attention-grabbing colors, Clothing Arts opted for sophisticated shades of black, slate, and mountain blue. The jacket’s collar is fashioned so it’s not too high or low, with ample room to accommodate a scarf, and instead of the awkward pocket placement found on traditional waterproof shells, they designed interior/exterior pockets—patent pending twin Napoleon INT/EXT PKTS™—which allows for easy access without undoing the main zipper. Six other pockets and Security Clips add protected, on-the-road storage. Other features include a 3-way adjustable and removable hood, hidden waist cinchers, and adjustable sleeve cuffs.
Building on the success and innovative design of the P^cubed line of Pick-Pocket Proof travel pants, Clothing Arts developed The Cubed Travel Jacket for wherever the road leads.
One thing I always hate about most high tech clothing is the feel of the fabric. Even though Clothing Arts apparel are light weight and easily roll up for the suitcase, the 100% nylon fabric doesn't cling or heat up hot and sticky like other nylon apparel. The brushed soft nylon is naturally wrinkle free and stain resistant and dries quickly when wet.
The pants are truly a clothing work-of-art: The pockets and zips are made for lefties or righties, The pants have the security of multiple built-in money belts, hidden pockets for passport and wallet. Everything is stored at your fingertips: dual smart-phone pockets, money cards pockets, and a camera hook on the belt; the trousers can also be turned into walking shorts.
Their shirts are soft and pleasant to the touch. The buttons are somewhat small, for a purpose, they are difficult for a pick-pocket to access the square pockets, which I like because things fit better in square, deep pockets.
About Clothing Arts:
Clothing Arts was born on a bus in Cambodia somewhere between Phnom Penh and Kampong Thom in late 2007 when Adam Rapp decided to trade his post at a hedge fund for a life of adventure and travel. As he seamlessly moved beyond borders in Europe and Asia, he discovered that his clothes did not do the same. After narrowly escaping a pick-pocketing attempt at the outset of a four month trip, Adam made up his mind to create the most durable, secure, comfortable, and stylish travel clothes on the market.

Roaming pick-pocket gangs are working the top travel destinations. While pulling my luggage along the Riva degli Schiavoni — Grand Canal waterfront promenade (Altana) in Venice, I suddenly am slammed by a "Bump and Lift" technique by a Roma gypsy. I immediately checked my wallet and luggage but nothing was missing except for two orange in the bag zipper pocket of my jacket. I looked around and saw three Romas smiling at me, eating oranges. I should have had the Clothing Arts Cubed Travel Jacket.
Pick-pockets like out-of-town travelers because they won't return to testify if they are caught. But let's not forget theft from bags while on commuter trains, buses, and public areas. Ameribag rides to the rescue.
Most day bags are unorganized, and easy to pilfer. With the Ameribag, the main zipper faces your body; there are lots of interior pockets with zippers to organize your tablet, wallet, passport, diary, cell phone, and other items. I usually don't like day backpacks because they are an open invitation to the thieves; I can't see what is happening behind me, and they hang off my body like a drupe on a tree.
I like to walk in certain areas of a city and these type of bags get annoying in short order. But the Ameribag's unique shape keeps weight evenly distributed and aligns with your spine; the strap is cushioned - that's why they call it the New Healthy Back Bag® Collection; chiropractors even endorse the bags. HBB is the perfect combination of style, function, and safety that is easy on the back, neck, and shoulders and protects your stuff while sightseeing or lounging by the pool. They make a great school bag too; my friend's daughter gave it the "Wow" factor.
Most back packs have to be removed to unzip them. The Ameribag is easily accessible without taking the bag off. Easy-see silver lining reflects natural light to make it easy to find things in the interior pockets.
The best-selling Microfiber comes in bursts of fruit-cocktail colors: Hot Pink, Mandarin, Midnight Blue, and Modern Taupe for a soft touch, sophistication, and functionality. With the latest 3D printing technology, the NEO Dimensional bag comes in modern grays and neutrals with an embossed hologram-style pattern on easy-care polyester fabric. The Tropical Luau bag brings exotic island cultures and colors to life with energetic color pallets in fun florals. The cute, fun, and colorful Baglett is a great functional accessory with an adjustable strap, perfect for a night out or keeping essentials handy while traveling. The ready-for-anything textured Distressed Nylon bag comes in vivid colors, great for travel and outdoor activities

I am on a city bus in Malta when a man shouts, "I lost my wallet." Lost no doubt to a pick-pocket. He should have carried an Ameribag
ZIKA VIRUS — prevention with EXOfficio
The Zika virus was first discovered in 1947 in Uganda. Mosquito-borne illnesses such as malaria, Dengue fever and West Nile virus are still a challenge throughout the globe. However, the spreading mosquito-borne illness called Zika virus is causing serious concerns in Brazil, the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and South America where it has been linked to a rise in infants born with microcephaly and other birth defects.
Because there is no vaccine for Zika, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends protection from mosquito bites, including the use of permethrin treated clothing like ExOfficio’s BugsAway line of men’s and women’s travel apparel and accessories.I have been using ExOfficio products for my tropical travels and their shirts and pants were welcome when cruising 1000 miles up the Nile 's Lake Nasser to Abu Simbel, Egypt. Even during a howling hot sand storm the mosquitoes made their presence known.
ExOfficio was the first consumer apparel brand in the U.S. to utilize Insect Shield® technology in 2004, and has provided comfort, convenience, and protection to travelers for over ten years through its BugsAway collection of apparel and accessories.. ExOfficio’s BugsAway styles are designed with travel-ready features and performance fabrics so that the wearer can travel with confidence. The insect repellent technology utilizes permethrin, which is invisible, odorless, and tightly bonded to the fabric fibers, lasting the expected lifetime of the garment. BugsAway products with Insect Shield technology are vetted, safe, and proven effective against mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers, and midges (no-see-ums), aiding in the battle against insect-borne diseases such as the Zika virus.
When traveling to countries where Zika virus or other viruses spread by mosquitoes are found, the CDC recommends the following prevention tactics:
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
- Use EPA-registered insect repellents (such as permethrin.
- Stay in places with air conditioning or use window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside.
- Sleep under a mosquito bed net if you are overseas or outside and are not able to protect yourself from mosquito bites.
- Treat clothing with permethrin or purchase permethrin-treated clothing.
- Always follow the label instructions when using insect repellent or sunscreen.
- Help reduce the number of mosquitoes inside and outside your home or hotel room by emptying standing water from containers such as flowerpots or buckets.
For the most updated information about the Zika virus, travelers should visit http://www.cdc.gov/zika/.
ExOfficio’s BugsAway collection includes men’s and women’s long sleeve shirts and pants, many with built-in UV protection as well as insect protection. Other styles available for men and women include short sleeve shirts, tees, jackets, hats, and socks; plus neck gaiters and bandanas. Items from the ExOfficio BugsAway collection are available for purchase from local and online specialty retail stores, including ExOfficio’s own flagship stores in the U.S. or online at www.exofficio.com. The newest styles are out now.
BULL FROG — sprays, gels, sticks and balms
Since the new awareness of the Zika virus bug spray companies have seen over a 50% rise in sales. A new entrant in the bug-be-gone field is Bull Frog, which manufactures a sunscreen and insect repellant combo as a spray, gel, stick, or balm. Bull Frog is DEET free and at 30 SPF I use the gel when on a sunny trout stream flyfishing for browns. Bull Frog Land Sport spray was designed for breathability and sweat resistance with an arcane sounding Sweat Tech factor that allows sweat to evaporate. The ultra-light formula dries instantly on application and goes on clear and isn't greasy or smelly; great for acne prone skin. Bull Frog also makes a Quik Stick that is a whopping 50 SPF and goes on with no clumping or drag,. Used mostly for the face, nose,, lips, ears, or scalp.
All Bull Frog products are hypoallergenic and great for sensitive skin and are fragrance free. The same goes to the $2 lip balm in a refreshing grapefruit flavor and a cooling menthol sensation. The Aloe Vera sooths the skin and reduces inflammation. The olive oil and jojoba oil are rich in antioxidants. Cocoa butter aids in moisturizing the lips; packed with vitamin E. Bull Frog retails for about $10 a bottle.

About Frogglez Goggles
Christian Hahn's 4-year-old daughter was struggling like everyone else, trying to make her goggles comfortable. It took the fun out of watching his daughter learn to swim. So, Christian went straight to his basement, and cut up some old wet suits from his surfer days in California to create goggles that would stay on without any stress. The prototypes worked so well that other parents asked him where they could buy a pair. That's how Frogglez Goggles, Made by my Dad™ was born.
