Safaris and Safari Lodges

Jurassic Falaza Game Park and Spa - The best place in the entire world to see rhinos in the wild is Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, and the best accommodations near the park are the luxury tents at Falaza Game Park and Spa.   Falaza means “chatterbox” and I discovered the full meaning of the term when I awoke to the arguments of the vervet monkeys just outside my zippered tent window.

The Golden Hour at White Elephant Safari Lodge and Bush Camp - South Africa has white lions so I was expecting pallid pachyderms at the White Elephant Safari Lodge and Bush Camp.

The Ghost of the Elephant Coast - From the N2 Highway Ghost Mountain looks like an angular baboon’s molar knocked out of kilter needing to be extracted from the earthly maw.  It is a tooth of time that has been the dominate feature in NE Zululand for eons and the mountain gets its name because the ancient Gaza Zulus buried their kings in the caves of the jaw and the wind animated sounds are eerie and ghostly. The Zulu word for Mkuze (the name of the river, village, and nearby Reserve) means, “to send caution”.

Zulu War - Isandlwana Lodge - During the Anglo-Zulu War three British columns marched from the coast of their Natal colony to find and defeat Zulu King Cetsbwayo, whose warriors were raiding Natal homesteads and stealing cattle below the Buffalo River that separated Natal from Zululand.

Amakhosi - A Place of Kings - Tonight I am resting where the Zulu kings slumbered, but in a modern and private Umntwana Honeymoon Suite on the banks of the Mkuse River at Amakhosi Safari Lodge in NE KwaZulu-Natal.

Horseback Haven at Pakamisa - My spirits were lifted up by the gracious hosts Isabella von Stepski and South African native Anthony Worsdale at the 2,500 hectares Pakamisa Private Game Reserve and Equestrian Centre in northern KwaZulu-Natal Province.

Great Bush Adventures at Grootbos - South Africa is well known for its bushveld landscapes and the country boasts grassveld, lowveld, highveld, thornveld, and if there was a classification for sandveld or duneveld it would be painting a picture of the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve.

Fearless Family Safaris at Sabi Sabi - Your family will meet many new families on a Sabi Sabi game safari;  roaming the neighborhood are lion and rhino families, giraffe and impala families, and leopard and zebra families.  The bushveld is full of families.

Big Cat Copuntry - Kings Camp - Of all the safari lodges I visited in South Africa, Kings Camp seemed to have the most diverse population of big cats; I saw leopards and lots of lion, but unfortunately no cheetahs, which are struggling throughout Africa to regain a toe hold.

Camp Jabulani Elephant Safaris - Camp Jabulani is about 25 minutes from the airport, located within the fenced Kapama Private Game Reserve in the Valley of the Olifants in the Central lowveld of Limpopo Province near Kruger National Park.

Cape to Capital on Rovos Rail - The 1950s era carriages travel the Old Karoo Pioneering Trail out of the Cape on a weekly 1,600 kilometer journey that travels no faster than 65kms per hour, and the windows can be thrown open to enjoy the grasslands and highveld scenery.

Major Adventures in Sani Pass - A passport is required from all travelers who ventured up the nine kilometer Pass; visas may be also required, depending on your nationality. Major Adventures makes the 6-7 hour drive daily through the highest road pass in Africa.

Rarified Retreat at The Cathedral Peak Hotel - At the end of the dead end lane is one of the world’s most magnificent retreats, the Cathedral Peak Hotel, set on 400 hectares of rolling hillocks and abutting the Cathedral Peak Nature Reserve.

Barrier of Spears Trout Fishing - The native Zulus call the massive mountain range uKhahlamba, or the “Barrier of Spears”.  When seen from the Cathedral Peak Hotel in KwaZululand it is an easy image to formulate.  The 600-mile-long spine cuts across the throat of South Africa, but nowhere as dramatically as at Cathedral Peak Hotel.

Cycads & Bromeliads at Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden - I had a wonderful afternoon ambling through the renowned Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, set below the eastern slopes of Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa.

Hotels and Spas

Luxury On The Half Shell , Oyster Box Hotel and Spa - Oysters are a health food and with modern refrigeration they can be eaten year around.  But for truly fresh oysters check yourself into the Oyster Box Hotel and Spa on Lighthouse Road above the Umhlanga Rocks 15 miles east of downtown Durban, South Africa.

Historic Grapes at Vineyard Hotel and Spa in Capetown - There is no better location for discovering the Cape’s vintages than from the Georgia-style Vineyard Hotel and Spa, which was the wine estate of Lady Anne Barnard, which was built in 1799 and then turned into a luxury hotel during the Victorian age, the third oldest hostelry in the Cape, and the sister property to another famous wine lands hotel in the Stellenbosch area, the d'Ouwe Werf Hotel (the oldest hotel in all South Africa).

Carte Blanche in Capetown at the 12 Apostles Hotel and Spa - If there had been 13 Apostles God would have had to add an additional peak to the World Heritage Site  of Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa, and the 12 Apostles Hotel and Spa would have to change its appellation to 13A.

Milked Back to Health at Fordoun - I am heading to Nottingham, not for the Sherwood Forest, but for a blissful stay at Fordoun Boutique Hotel and Spa, located along the Nottingham Road in KwaZulu-Natal, in South Africa.

Leading Luxury Indicator - The Saxon Hotel Spa and Villas - There will be no argument from me — as a luxury indicator The Saxon Boutique Hotel, Villas, and Spa in Johannesburg is leading the way to superb suburbian relaxation; the resort has been voted the world's leading boutique hotel every year since 2001, and it is a member of the elite Leading Small Hotels of the World.
